A Cultural Competency Training
Learn how to engage and support Service Members, Veterans, and their Families through culturally responsive, trauma-informed care. This training equips providers with practical tools to navigate military culture, power dynamics, invisible wounds, and build trust with SMVF populations in behavioral health settings.
Objectives
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
1. Describe key elements of military culture and how they may influence communication, identity, and help-seeking among Service Members, Veterans, and their Families.
2. Differentiate common features of PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and moral injury, including areas where their effects may overlap.
3. Identify cultural assumptions, power imbalances, and potential triggers that may affect engagement with veterans and military-connected families.
4. Apply culturally responsive, trauma-informed strategies to build trust, support autonomy, and maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
5. Demonstrate communication approaches that promote rapport, collaboration, and respectful service delivery with SMVF populations.
