Conversations that Inspire Change

This highly interactive training provides Peer Recovery Specialists with the tools to evoke motivation, resolve ambivalence, and strengthen commitment to change. Participants will learn and practice the core MI skills—Open questions, Affirmations, Reflections, and Summaries (OARS)—to support lasting recovery.

**The upcoming session is October 13th AND 14th from 9am to 12pm. Both days are required for completion of the training.

Objectives

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the purpose, spirit, and four processes of Motivational Interviewing.
2. Demonstrate OARS skills—open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summaries—in peer recovery conversations.
3. Recognize preparatory and mobilizing change talk using the DARN-CAT framework.
4. Use person-centered strategies to explore ambivalence, evoke change talk, and support self-directed recovery goals.
5. Respond to discord in ways that preserve trust, affirm autonomy, and strengthen collaboration.
